The Chicago White Sox jumped on Jim Kaat in the early innings and Joel Horlen scattered 9 hits over 7 1/3 innings as the Chisox held on to defeat the Minnesota Twins 5 to 4. Harmon Killebrew's solo homerun in the 7th helped to end Horlen's day on the mound, but Bob Locker followed and closed out the 8th and 9th innings to capture his 8th save.
The Sox accumulated 9 hits on the evening with Don Buford, Ken Berry and Jerry Adair each collecting 2 hits a piece. The fourth inning saw the Palehose plate 3 runs with Berry singling, Duane Josephson tripling and scoring Berry. Jerry Adair and Ronnie Hansen later doubling and each driving in a run. 12,200+ fans saw Joel Horlen improve his record to 5 - 0 on the season and the Sox record is now 19 - 8
I love the scoreboard photo with lineups listed. Amazing that you were able to find the game that corresponds to the photograph. I also love the action shot of No-neck sliding into third in front of Cesar Tovar.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the Pete Ward picture, one of the biggest mistakes the franchise would ever make is plastered on the scoreboard underneath the clock. Sox should have never left WGN.

No doubt, with 20/20 hindsight the Sox brass back then made some boneheaded decisions, including the WGN issue....The decisions that stick in my gut were trading Buford, Agee, Weis, and Stroud. Those moves essentially ripped the heart out of the fledgling offense that was based on speed.
