Hoyt Wilhelm Gets Win As White Sox Earn Split in Doubleheader

April 30, 1967 (Game 1) @ Comiskey Park

The Cleveland Indians Gary Bell handcuffed Chicago 2 to 1 in the first game scattering 7 hits and allowing only a Tommy McCraw solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. Bruce Howard pitched brilliantly through eight innings surrendering 1 run and only 2 hits. Indians Leon  Wagner's solo shot in the top of the 9th off Bob Locker gave Cleveland the insurance run that won it.
The White Sox had opportunities to score but couldn't come up with a clutch 2-out hit. Ron Hansen was cut down at the plate for the 3rd out in the 5th inning.

April 30, 1967 (Game 2) @ Comiskey Park

The Chicago White Sox came back from a 2 - 0 deficit to gain a split in Sunday's doubleheader winning 4 to 2.  Jim O'Toole started his first game of the season allowing 5 hits and 2 runs in 1 1/3 innings.  John Buzhardt, Dennis Higgins and Hoyt Wilhelm pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings in relief with Wilhelm earning his first win of 1967. Higgins hurled 3 1/3 innings.

Tommie Agee had two key rbi's and a SB. Don Buford scored twice with 2 more SB's. Al Weis and Walt Williams contributed rbi hits. This White Sox comeback win is the first game in an amazing 10 game winning streak.

  1. O'Toole grew up on the south side and he must have watched the go-go Sox of the fifties. I imagine that it was a thrill to come to the club in '67. Too bad injury limited his contribution.

  2. #21 Jim O'Toole pitched two absolute masterpieces for Chicago before he was sidelined. Watch for a terrific blog segment on him coming soon!

    1. Thank you for doing so much research. I look forward to your segment. A couple of other south side Chicago boys who pitched for the White Sox in '68 and '69 were Gerry Arrigo from my neighborhood and Jim's brother Denny O'Toole. Again, thank you for this blog.
