KC's Chuck Dobson 5-Hitter Stymies Palehose 3 - 1

June 3, 1967 @ Comiskey Park (Day)

23 year old Kansas City Athletics Chuck Dobson cruised to a complete game 3-1 victory over the White Sox allowing only 5 hits registering his 2nd win of the season. Kansas City scored its first run in the 6th as Ramon Webster reached base on a Don Buford error, eventually scoring on a sac fly off the bat of Dick Green. Dobson helped his cause leading off the 7th inning with a single igniting the winning 2 run rally off starter Gary Peters.

The Sox lone run came by an RBI double from Tommy McCraw scoring Tommie Agee. Ken Berry led Chicago going 2 for 4. Gary Peters pitched 6 1/3 with 2 K's while allowing 2 earned runs. Peters record is now 6-3.

White Sox Lose Heartbreaker to Kansas City in 13 Innings 6-4

The Chicago White Sox came out of the gate scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning to knock out John 'Blue Moon' Odom and staking Joe Horlen to a 3-2 lead. But, home team bats fell silent after that as Paul Lindblad relieved for 8 innings shutting down the Palehose on 2 hits through the ninth inning.

The Athletics tied the game at 3-3 in the third and not until the 13th inning did another runner cross home plate. Chisox starter Joe Horlen went 10 innings allowing only 8 hits and 3 earned runs. Hoyt Wilhelm relieved in the 13th and surrendered 2 walks and a hit batter before left handed reliever Lew Krausse stroked a 2-out 2-run single to give KC the lead and eventual victory. Krausse picked up the win in relief while Wilhelm suffered the loss.

Tommy McCraw was 3 for 6 on the night with 1 rbi and Pete Ward had 2 rbi's. Tommie Agee continued his fine season going 2 for 5 with his 17th SB and a solo HR in the 13th. The White Sox finished the long night with 8 hits in 44 AB's.

Chicago White Sox Bob Locker Appeared in 77 Games during 1967

Much more has been said about the White Sox starting pitchers of 1967 compared to the relievers. The formidable bullpen that year was led by Bob Locker and Hoyt Wilhelm. Bob Locker, #23 appeared in 77 games that year and finished the season with a 2.09 ERA and 20 Saves. Although the Palehose came up shy of the World Series in 1967, at least 7 players from that team later experienced a World Series Championship (Can you name all 7 ?). Bob Locker and Joe Horlen tasted championship champagne while teammates with the Oakland A's in 1972.

Ron Hansen's Walk Off Hit Plates Ken Berry in 11th, ChiSox Win 3-2

May 31, 1967 @ Comiskey Park (N) vs. Baltimore Orioles

Ron Hansen atoned for a critical error in the 7th inning leading to an unearned run by singling in Ken Berry off Ed Watt in the bottom of the 11th giving the Chicago White Sox a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Nearly 14,000 watched the White Sox in their return home to Comiskey Park after an arduous 12 game road trip.

Jim O'Toole pitched brilliantly through 6 innings but ran into trouble in the 7th. A walk, an error and base hit allowed the Orioles to score their 1st run and cut Chicago's lead to 2-1. Bob Locker relieved O'Toole and with Baltimore runners at 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs, Locker induced consecutive grounders to the right side allowing back to back infielder assists to JC Martin cutting down two runners at the plate.

Tommie Agee led off Chicago's 1st inning with a solo homerun (7). Al Weis had 2 SB's, Don Buford 3 hits, and Ken Berry 2 hits and a RBI. Frank and Brooks Robinson were a combined 2 for 9 with 4 K's. Hoyt Wilhelm pitched the final 2 1/3 innings retiring all 7 hitters in order and captured his 2nd win.
