Pitching coach Marv Grissom has his starting staff ready for start of season: Joel Horlen, Bruce Howard, Tommy John, John Buzhardt and Gary Peters. Horlen, John and Peters later becoming the Big 3 while compiling a combined 15 shutouts during the 1967 campaign. Other starting pitchers during the exciting 1967 season would be southpawJim O'Toole (until injured), knuckler Wilbur Wood, rookies Cisco Carlos, Steve Jones, Fred Klages, and Aurelio Monteagudo.

Marv Grissom replaced Ray Berres who had been the coach for so many years under Al Lopez. Great photograph. I am so glad that you are able to find such great graphic. You mention Cisco Carlos above. I remember a huge game I attended in late August, the second game of a twilight doubleheader (Peters was knocked out in a first game loss) and the Cisco kid held Boston scoreless while the Sox won in the ninth on a walk-off hit to right center by Ken Berry. I can still see the line drive in my mind so many years later.
ReplyDeleteA special Ray Berres feature is planned for the blog. And, a cool segment on Cisco Carlos is also scheduled. Thanks for the comments!
ReplyDeletewhitesoxfan67,
ReplyDeleteyou mention above the doubleheader you attended where Carlos pitched and Berry had the walkoff hit in the 2nd game..... I'll later be posting a pic of Berry shown receiving congrats immediately following that game winning hit.......
